ESPN.com’s Hashmarks’ James Walker reports on the contact from Ravens minicamp. Says Walker:
“Things got testy with the second day of practice moving indoors. Despite the drills being non-contact, there was a lot of grabbing and shoving. On one play, offensive tackle Oniel Cousins and defensive lineman Amon Gordon dragged each other to the ground. Players from the offense and defense ran to the fight in what appeared to be a bench-clearing brawl. But most of the guys were either joking on the outskirts or working to separate the two combatants.”
…and then…
“Defensive backs Corey Ivy and Frank Walker also got into a brief skirmish towards the end of practice but were quickly separated by teammates.”
There is just one problem: There is to be no contact in minicamp. You don’t drag each other to the ground or get in heated scuffles when you aren’t touching each other.
So what’s the big deal? They all do it, right? True, but it’s another example of Gene Upshaw not doing his job. This is the kind of ammunition that the groundswell against Upshaw needs. The players take beatings throughout the year as it is, they shouldn’t be subject to contact (some of them rookies who haven’t signed deals yet) that is forbidden by the rules.
This has been going on for years and Upshaw needs to do something about it.
