Apparently, Yankee pitcher Phil Hughes gets blinded by the light. He claims that while he has excellent vision, he does experience blurriness during some night games at certain stadiums because of the lights. In other words: “It’s not my fault I suck.”
Hughes is only 21 so it isn’t panic time yet, but he could be sent to the minors. The Yankees aren’t off to a great start considering the injuries to Jorge Posada and A-Rod.
Backup catcher Chris Stewart wasn’t exactly on the same page with Hughes the other night. Stewart stood up on what would have been a called strike three to Gary Sheffield, who homered with his extra chance. Hughes didn’t exactly take the blame.
“I thought I saw something different than what he put down,” Hughes said. “The sequence (of signals) made me think curveball, but he called for a fastball. It was strike three, too, but he (the umpire) couldn’t call it because he stood up and then (Sheffield) homered, so it was pretty costly,” Hughes said.
Anyone else get the feeling that Hughes is an excuse maker? Just a feeling we get. Keep an eye on that.
